ISO 45001 is an international standard for occupational health & safety management systems (OHS) that was first published as BS8800 to BS OHSAS 18001. “BS” indicates a British Standard, meaning that the origins were not internationally recognized by ISO. The OHS standard provides a framework for managing health and safety risks in the workplace. Benefits include identifying and reducing significant hazards and risks as a means of protecting the well being of associates performing work duties on behalf of an organization.

According to the International Labor Organization, over 7600 workers die each day from work-related incidents or diseases. That is nearly 3 million incidents annually! The OH&S Series is based on the requires of the ISO 45001:2018 international occupational health & safety management system standard aimed at reducing this number dramatically. This series provides students with course options ranging from a top management overview to skills necessary for managing and effective OH&S audit program.

ISO 45001 outlines dozens of requirements, organized under 23 sub-clauses, that organizations must comply with in order to achieve 3rd-party certification. The standard is reviewed every 5 years, and updated as needed, to ensure that it remains relevant and effective for organizations of all sizes and types. The 1st edition of the OH&S standard was published in 1999 as BS OHSAS 18001, with a second release in 2007 as a British Standard. The 3rd edition of the OH&S standard became an international standard in 2018, making the current version of the standard “ISO 45001:2018”.
