ISO 14001 is an international standard for environmental management systems (EMS) that was first published by the ISO in 1996. This standard helps organizations achieve their intended environmental management system outcomes, providing value to the environment, the organization itself and other interested parties. Benefits include enhanced environmental performance, achieving environmental objects and fulfilling compliance obligations.
ISO 14001 outlines 185 requirements that organizations must comply with in order to achieve 3rd-party certification. The standard is reviewed every 5 years, and updated as needed, to ensure that it remains relevant and effective for organizations of all sizes and types. The 3rd edition of the ISO 14001 was released in 2015, making the current version of the standard “ISO 14001:2015”.
